ASE Research Group awarded $3.6M from the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E)

1/2013 – A team led by Professor Asegun Henry at Georgia Tech, along with collaborators at Stanford University and the University of Rochester were awarded $3.6M by the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) to pursue high temperature liquid metal based concentrated solar power (CSP). The project, entitled “High Efficiency Solar Fuels Reactor Concept” is focused on the development of prototype ceramic pumps, valves, circulation loops and a high efficiency receiver. The technology, if successful, could lower the cost of CSP by ~ 30% from 13.5 cents/kWh to 9.5 cents/kWh, which would put CSP with thermal energy storage very close to parity with fossil fuels.
